Playing a huge part in this transition has been the design firm IDEO. In addition to accomplishing significant innovations in its own organization, IDEO has suggested new possibilities for design through its diverse activities. I talked with IDEO CEO Tim Brown about the company.

Traditional Craft Forms Hairstyling Scissors
Among various types of scissors, hairdressing scissors are definitely “hard workers.” When a hairdresser or barber cut a client’s hair, the number of snips can approximate 1,000 on average. Serving 10 clients per day, the number of snips would be 10,000, and assuming that the hair salon operates 250 days per year, that number would reach 2.5 million. Accordingly, scissors are required to maintain their sharpness under these abusive conditions. Since a client might complain if even so much as a single strand of hair gets snagged in the scissors, hairdressers are pretty demanding about their quality. They are the epitome of the professional tool.

The Kokuyo Design Award competition, which solicits from the general public product designs that excel from the users' perspective and endeavors to commercialize them, has just held its 12th occasion to date. Ever since it was established in 2002, the event, which has resulted in the birth of hit products such as Kadokeshi (eraser) and Campus notepad Parakuruno (notepad) from among the winning works, has become a very appealing design competition for young designers who want to see their ideas realized in the marketplace. This year too, the event saw many unique proposals from both inside and outside Japan.
