Designers on AXIS cover 9 Richard Hutten

We asked him to assume some poses, and Richard Hutten made some variations willingly. Then we could make an unique cover for our AXIS vol.78 (March/April 1999). As he always says that he wants to make people happy with design, he showed us what a designer he was.
Here are some of his impressive comments in our interview.
“Recently Droog Design has come into the limelight and has created a movement. But since spirituality occupies an important position in Droog Design, our work is hard to imitate. There are many designers who just copy style, but what’s important is if the work has a philosophy or concept, and if it has been thoroughly thought out to the very details.”
“Form follows concept. In Dutch, the word design is Vorm Genen which means form giving, to give something form or to design form. But in my creations form is only one of the results. Since I believe that concept is more important than form, I want to use existing forms to express new concepts and usage.”
Richard Hutten was born in the Netherlands in 1967. He graduated from the Academy Industrial Design Eindhoven in 1991. In the same year he established Richard Hutten Ontwerpen, and in addition to releasing products through Droog Design he is directing the design label REEEL. He works on furniture design, various product design, interior design, and exhibition design. Some of his products are in the permanent collections of : Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, Amsterdam, Central Museum Utrecht, VitraDesign Museum, Weil am Rhein, San Francisco MoMA.
